Music Mondays – The Voice

Thanks to one sick day stuck home on the couch, I found myself watching The Voice on demand, and am now addicted. I love the idea of blind auditions and the coaches only listening before deciding if they want the singer on their team or not! It makes it more about the music, and well…the voice.

Here are some of my favorites from the first 4 rounds of blind auditions! Enjoy!

Justin Hopkins – Babylon

Jordan Rager – Chicken Fried

Jamie Lono – Folsom Prison Blues **One of my favorites

Juliet Simms – Oh! Darling

Mathai – Rumour Has It

Last but not least – my absolute favorite:

Lindsey Pavao – Say aah!

Happy Listening!!

Today’s Mantra – For a Gemini

My horoscope has a mantra at the end of it every day. Today’s  struck a chord, so I’m sharing it with you. What’s your mantra?

Mantra: Changing circumstances require changing attitudes

And a song to go along with it.

*It’s been days now & you change your mind again,
It feels like years & I can tell how time can bend your ideas.
And the boys go on & on & on & on & the boys go on & on & on & on
And there’s gold falling from the ceiling of this world,
Falling from the heartbeat of this girl,
falling from the things we should have learned
Falling from the things we could have heard*

Bring On The Fall

In spite of all the floods and downed trees, one pleasant thing Irene left behind was the most perfect fall feeling breeze. It’s not quite fall yet, but I’m ready for it, and mellowing out with this Music Monday’s fall-ready tunes. Happy Listening.

1. Demi Lovato – Skyscraper
You can take everything I have
You can break everything I am
Like I’m made of glass
Like I’m made of paper
Go on and try and tear me down
I will be rising from the ground
Like a skyscraper

2. Mat Kearney – Ships In The Night
I turn the lights down low
Walk these halls alone
We can feel so far from so close
Like ships in the night
You keep passing me by
We’re just wasting time
Trying to prove who’s right
And if it all goes crashing into the sea
If it’s just you and me trying to find the light
Like ships in the night

3. Augustana – Just Stay Here Tonight
My hands are tied and I’ve been rollin’ the dice
My legs are broken and I ain’t up for a fight
I’ll make it rain from an empty sky
If you just stay here tonight

4. Digital Daggers – Where The Lonely Ones Roam
Sun’s come up
And there’s no one else around
Meet me in the shadows
Won’t you tell me what you found
You’ve got everything to lose
Yeah I’m waiting on you

5. Matt Nathanson – Kiss Quick
Kiss quick, I got a line out the door
Who all think they can save me.
One by one they lay the world at my feet,
One by one they drive me crazy

6. Jacob & Lily – Hosea
I remember the summer and that sweet rain,
Moments of silence moments of pain
But your heart is wild and your eyes they wonder, why do I miss you

7. Mat Kearney – Chasing The Light
And you keep saying that you’re running down a dream
But you don’t know where it leads
As you keep chasing the light
Every bridge that you keep on burning
Every leaf that you keep on turning
Every road that you find uncertain
Pray for you now
Baby that you’ll figure it out

8. We Are The In Crowd – Never Be What You Want
I’m scared to death and it shows
The flame burned out, but it glows
And the look in your eyes says things I don’t wanna know
It’s time to go, come closer
And I can’t say anything, everything comes out the wrong way
I’ll never be what you want
I wouldn’t change any part of me
Just to make you stay

9. Angus & Julia Stone – You’re The One That I Want (Grease Cover)
You better shape up ’cause I need a man
And my heart is set on you
You better shape up, better understand
To my heart I must be true
You’re the one that I want

10. Matt Nathanson – Modern Love ♥♥obsessed with all this song’s lyrics
I let ‘em in,
Oh man, I let ‘em win
I’d burn my house down just to hear them scream my name
I’ve carried hopes and heavy daydreams, she said
But I’m done with sleeping
Take the phone calls
Take this circus
Take the drama, ’cause baby it’s worthless
This modern love is not enough

Happy Monday & Happy Listening

Mayday Parade

This Music Monday, I picked a band that I’ve seen showcased in one of my favorite tumblr blogs several times Music and Lyrics: Cause What’s Life Without Music? I’ve come to appreciate the lyrics and emotions Mayday Parade creates and evokes effortlessly.

Mayday Parade – The Memory
*Someone help me cause the memory, convinced itself to tear me apart, and it’s gonna succeed before long*

Mayday Parade – Miserable at Best
*And everything I could give, is everything you couldn’t take*

Mayday Parade – I’d Hate to Be You When People Find Out What This Song is About
*Well, I’m thinking of the worst things that I could say to you, but a promise doesn’t mean a thing anymore*

Mayday Parade – You Be The Anchor That Keeps My Feet On The Ground, I’ll Be The Wings That Keep Your Head In The Clouds
my favorite lyrics♥♥
*And I’ll be here by the ocean, just waiting for proof that there are sunsets and silhouette dreams, all my sand castles fall, like the ashes of cigarettes and every wave drags me to sea, I could stand here for hours just to ask God the question, is everyone here make-believe? With a tear in His voice, He said, “Son, that’s the question.” Does this deafening silence mean nothing, to no one but me?*

Happy Listening. Happy Monday!

Musical Motivation

As I finish my Monday, “I will exercise more this week” exercising, I realize it was easier to go longer today thanks to an updated and upbeat workout mix. Here are some good songs, which will hopefully motivate you to push yourself harder and longer, as they do for me.

1. Pitbull – Give Me Everything

2. Robyn – Indestructible

3. Ke$ha – Blow Remix feat B.O.B.

4. Freemasons feat Sophie Ellis-Baxter – Heartbreak Make Me A Dancer

5. Rihanna – Man Down

6. Katy Perry – Last Friday Night (TGIF)

7. Kaskade – Fire In Your New Shoes

8. The Naked and Famous – Punching In A Dream

9. La Roux – Bulletproof

10. Ellie Goulding – Under The Sheets

11. Charice – Louder

And last but not least a warm down, feel good song:

Greyson Chance – Waiting Outside The Lines

Happy Listening!

Music Monday – Alison Krauss & Union Station

I always love folk and country music, but the last couple of days I’ve been on an even bigger blue-grassy folk kick than normal. Thankfully I have Alison Krauss & Union Station to fit perfectly into that category for me.

If the incredibly popular and award-winning soundtrack “O Brother Where Art Thou?” wasn’t enough of a testament to Alison Krauss’ moving voice and lyrics, her new album with Union Station should be.

Here are my 3 favorites from “Paper Airplane” and 2 of my all time favorite Alison Krauss songs, yes you heard one already with the Country Couples…what can I say, I love it.

Alison Krauss & Union Station – Paper Airplane
*But every silver linin’
Always seems to have a cloud
That comes my way
Anticipated pleasure
Or unexpected pain
No choice I fear*

Alison Krauss & Union Station – My Love Follows You Where You Go
*Future like a promise
Your city of gold
Stubborn in your bones and
Jesus in your soul
Seeing you stand there
Starin’ at the unknown
I won’t pretend that it’s not killin’ me
Watchin’ you walk away slow*

Alison Krauss & Union Station – Miles to Go
*Every photograph is another lesson learned
Every sleepless night is another page I’ve turned
I wake up to fallin’ dreams
And the petals start to fade by the picket fences
Just another shade of miles and miles to go*

Alison Krauss w/ Gillian Welch (From O Brother Where Art Thou?) – I’ll Fly Away
*When the shadows of this life have gone,
I’ll fly away;
Like a bird from prison bars has flown,
I’ll fly away (I’ll fly away)*

Alison Krauss w/Brad Paisley – Whiskey Lullaby♥♥
*She put him out like the burning end of midnight cigarette
She broke his heart; he spent his whole life trying to forget
We watched him drink his pain away, a little at a time
But he never could get drunk enough to get her off his mind*

There’s few things more pleasant than honest and simple lyrics with beautiful vocals all put to a tune people can sit and enjoy especially on a gorgeous summer night.

Happy listening!

Music Mondays – Lady Antebellum “Just A Kiss”

Obsessed with their first big single “Need You Now”, I was stoked when Lady Antebellum showcased their new single “Just A Kiss”  on American Idol, and that it lived up to their first album packed with catchy and moving singles like “Ready to Love Again”, “American Honey” and “Hello World”. I always love male – female duets, and with most of their songs falling into that category with heartfelt vocals and lyrics it’s hard not to want to listen to them over and over again.

Here is there new single for everyone else to enjoy, as well as my favorites from their first album. Happy Listening!

Just A Kiss

*Just a kiss on your lips in the moonlight
Just a touch of the fire burning so bright
I don’t want to mess this thing up
I don’t want to push too far
Just a shot in the dark that you just might be the one I’ve been waiting for my whole life*

Need You Now

*Another shot of whiskey can’t stop looking at the door
Wishing you’d come sweeping in the way you did before
And I wonder if I ever cross your mind
For me it happens all the time
It’s a quarter after one I’m a little drunk and I need you now
Said I wouldn’t call but I lost all control and I need you now
And I don’t know how I can do without I just need you now*

American Honey

*Get caught in the race of this crazy life
Trying to be everything can make you lose your mind
I just wanna go back in time to American honey*

Ready To Love Again

*Yeah, I’m ready to feel now
No longer am I afraid of the fall down
It must be time to move on now
Without the fear of how it might end
I guess I’m ready to love again*

Music Mondays – Ingrid Michaelson

You’ve likely heard her sing *if you are chilly, here take my sweater* in the Old Navy commercial, and without a doubt in the background of your favorite television drama, but many times when I mention her name, people cannot pinpoint her music.

In an effort to fix that, since I love all of her songs from the upbeat to the mellow, I am showcasing some Ingrid Michaelson for everyone this Music Monday.

I hope you enjoy her songs as much as I do. Happy Listening.

Maybe (One of my favorites)

*I don’t want to be the one to say goodbye
But I will, I will, I will
And I don’t wanna sit on the pavement while you fly
But I will, I will, oh yes I will
Because maybe in the future
You’re gonna come back*

Parachute (Another favorite)

*I don’t tell anyone about the way you hold my hand
I don’t tell anyone about the things that we have planned
I won’t tell anybody, won’t tell anybody
They wanna push me down, they wanna see you fall down*

All Love

*When I push the sheets away from your face
And watch you sleep all day here
And when I push you away
And say you simply cannot stay here
Well it’s all love, all love
It’s all love, my stupid love*

Once Was Love

*I gotta see if I’m filled up when it’s only me
It’s not your fault but you just can’t be here
Now that my heart has gone, now that my heart has gone
Now that my heart has gone
Just because there once was love
Don’t mean a thing, don’t mean a thing

Last, but certainly not least:

Turn To Stone
*let’s go to sleep with clearer heads
and hearts to big to fit our beds
and maybe we wont feel so alone
before we turn to stone*

Jar of Hearts – Christina Perri

This Music Monday…well, Music Tuesday, (I got a little behind getting this up last night) I wanted to share some music with everyone, even if it is a day late. A singer/songwriter whose voice is haunting and soothing all at once; then put to a melodic piano and poetic lyrics, it’s hard not to get hooked.

With words like:

*Who do you think you are?
Running ’round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
And tearing love apart
You’re gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
So don’t come back for me*

Christina Perri is sure to find a place among the Adeles, Colbie Caillats, and Regina Spektors in like-minded music lovers like myself! Happy listening!

Music Mondays – Women of Wonder

This Monday Mother Nature got her kicks while playing tricks on us New Yorkers who were ready to pack away our winter coats and sweaters over the 70 degree weekend. Mixing some snow into the chilly rain we experienced today, it was a dreary start to the week. ‘Wintry mix’ and rain always brings on a certain musical mood. For today’s Music Monday – here are some female vocalists and musicians who fit perfectly into a day like today.

Music Monday - Women of Wonder 3/21/11

Avril Lavigne – Push
Although an acquired taste for some, I buy Avril’s albums time and time again. Pulled in by her lyrics filled with energy and angst, all sung out to catchy beats. Written organically and from a place we can all relate to, you can imagine her songs playing in the soundtrack of your life.
*And maybe you should just shut up, even when it gets tough, baby, ’cause this is love, and you know when push comes to shove, it’s gonna take the both of us, baby, this is love*
Avril Lavigne – Push

Katie Costello – The Weirds
A new addition to my playlist, her voice is reminiscent of Rosi Golan’s; dark, tender and soothing. When you listen to her whole album and the wide variety of rhythmic arrangements and lyrical depth, it’s obvious she’s more than a voice, but an incredibly talented musician.
*I’ve given up on waving off the flies that have blackened my mind, my sugar coated mind, why can’t I whistle, and why can’t I cry, why can’t I love you, the way I wish I liked? I guess I have the weirds*
Katie Costello – The Weirds

The Band Perry – If I Die Young
A staple in my playlists since I’ve discovered it, a typical country themed song where someone dies, someone loses their dog, their house, or their husband etc.; but with an upbeat tune and smooth vocals it ends up being a calming song I can listen to over and over again.
*If I die young, bury me in satin, lay me down on a, bed of roses sink me in the river, at dawn, send me away with the words of a love song*
The Band Perry – If I Die Young

Taylor Swift – Back to December
Whether you’re a Taylor Swift fan or not, or simply refuse to like her because, clearly you should have dated Jake Gyllenhall, you can’t deny the success she’s earned at such a young age. Yes, some of the melodies in her songs sound similar to others she’s released, but they’re all catchy and you can’t deny thinking “ya, I’ve been there”, when listening to the heartfelt secrets she trusts her listeners with.
*We small talk, work and the weather your guard is up and I know why, because the last time you saw me is still burned in the back of your mind, you gave me roses and I left them there to die. So this is me swallowing my pride, standin’ in front of you, sayin’ I’m sorry for that night – I go back to December all the time*
Taylor Swift – Back to December

Adele – Set Fire To The Rain
I cannot praise Adele and her new album enough. On this rainy March day, there’s no one better fit to complete today’s Music Monday list, than Adele with my favorite of her new songs. Dripping with love, lust and the full spectrum of emotions we feel in relationships, Adele wraps it all up in a package so pleasing to the ear, you can’t help but get wrapped up with her.
*My hands, they’re strong, but my knees were far too weak to stand in your arms without falling to your feet. But there’s a side to you that I never knew, never knew. All the things you say, they were never true, never true. And the games you play, you would always win, always win. But I set fire to the rain, watch it pour as I touched your face, let it burn while I cry ‘Cause I heard it screaming out your name*
Adele – Set Fire to the Rain
