Thirsty Thursday – The Bourgeois Pig

As the temperature begins to drop…for real this time…I’m reminded of one of my  favorite cozy cold weather bars - The Bourgeois Pig. My best friend and I used to come here for our best-friend date nights, share a baked brie platter and catch up over an amazing pitcher of 7th Street Sangria.

The specials aren’t every night, and this is definitely not a cheap Thursday night beer joint, but with its velvet curtains, antique chairs and mirrors, and red-lit ambiance it’s a quaint neighborhood gem everyone should get to at least once! Especially if you’re a resident NYC wino and happen to love cheese and/or fondue!

There are some specials – have no fear: 

Monday, Tuesdays, Saturdays & Sundays:  5pm – 7pm all bottles of wines are 1/2 priced

The wait to get in on a weekend night can sometimes be quite long, so if you have time, get there early, cozy up in a corner and take in the atmosphere!

I recommend the baked brie platter or the French Onion Fondue and the 7th Street Sangria!

Fiddlesticks Pub & Grill

As the temperature drops and a gorgeous pre-fall breeze rolls in, head over to a bar that still has outdoor seating, but a cozy inside bar as well.

Fiddlesticks Pub & Grill is a traditional Irish Pub located on Greenwich Avenue in the Village. It is a cozy bar with inside and outside seating, friendly bartenders and a fabulous happy hour. If you’re someone like me who loves a bar with some good nooks to make your home – you’ll love this one! Or if you’re already a fan of their sister bar Galway Hooker.

Happy Hour is Mon – Fri: 4pm to 8pm. All beers, house wines & liquors are $4.

On the weekends you can roll up for a special brunch for $10, which gets you brunch and 2 complimentary drinks.

Of course, like most bars I prefer and recommend, this one has a full menu, packed with delicious small bites or bigger meals if you’re settling in for dinner. I’m partial to their French Onion Soup and Mac & Cheese, but everything I’ve seen served looks yummy!

675 Bar

This Thursday, grab your friends and get ready to play some board games, pool, Foosball or Jenga! Like a big living room in someone’s posh, but relaxed mansion, 675 Bar is quite possibly the only chill place in the Meatpacking District. With little cubby hole rooms you can plop yourself in a comfy chair and settle in with some games before the crowd starts to roll in around 11pm.

Although more low-key than you can usually find in that area, don’t walk in expecting to find 2$ PBR’s and your mom’s pizza bagels. They do have a cocktail list of fancier drinks (which are all pretty delish) as well as fancier finger foods. I recommend the Azul Perra, a delicious purpley concoction of blueberries, vodka and pomegranates.

With pretty decent music, and enough room that you’re not insanely cramped, grab a friend, eat some food, drink some drinks and then go dance the night away!

The Penny Farthing

This Thirsty Thursday head back over to the East Village just a touch North to The Penny Farthing.

The Penny Farthing is a spacious (with two floors) old-fashioned feeling neighborhood spot. With a mix of Irish Pub and American Country, the wooden bar and homestead decor is comforting and inviting. Mixing it up between a low-key lunch place during the day and a lively social scene at night, The Penny Farthing seems to have found the key to conquering both worlds.

The Penny serves brunch, lunch, dinner and pub food at the bar. With a special brunch on weekends between 11am and 4pm with a wide range of typical brunch favs. Everything I’ve ever ordered here is delicious, including their Buffalo Wings, Spinach & Artichoke Dip, and Fish & Chips.

Happy Hour is simple. Half priced almost anything you can think of Monday thru Friday from 4pm to 7pm. Including some old time classic cocktails, like Manhattans (careful, they’re lethal), and a Southern Fizz.

The Penny can get quite crowded on the weekends, resulting in a line to get in – I always try to go on a weekday and take advantage of their happy hour since their normal prices are a little higher than average – $12-13 a cocktail.

Thirsty Thursday – Bua

This morning I woke up to sunny blue skies and the most calming summer breeze. It felt so perfect outside, now sitting in a cave-like office, is less than thrilling. Therefore, looking forward to all things outside, this Thirsty Thursday head over to an East Village outdoor bar and forget that you’ve been inside during a day like today.

Bua is a low-key East Village favorite. With exposed bricks, outdoor seating and a decent happy hour, it’s no wonder you never see it empty! Although technically an Irish Pub – Bua meaning victory in Gaelic – it doesn’t feel like the typical Irish Pubs that line the streets of NYC. Filled mostly by locals, it’s an excellent spot for those looking to dodge the hipsters and trend-scene and just enjoy a night out on St. Mark’s Place.

Happy Hour is from 4pm to 8pm every day!
$5 Cocktails – including their delicious Caipirinha! Check out the rest on their menu!
$4 Imported Beers
$5 Glasses of Sangria or $18 for a Carafe

Also serving food, for those of us who like to eat while they drink, Bua has a fancier selection of bar food, including Berkshire Pulled Pork Sliders – $9 and Corned Beef & Gruyère Sandwich – $10.

Thirsty Thursday – Pianos

Although it may not look like much from the front, inside Pianos there is a lively mix of people, music and drinks.

Located in the heart of the Lower East Side, Pianos has happy hour every day from 3pm to 7pm including:

Select Beers – $3
Well Drinks, Wine & Frozen Margaritas – $4
Special Plates – $5
Nachos – $2
Sandwiches – $5 & $6

Aside from a super cheap happy hour, Pianos is always pumping with music, whether by DJ or live bands. You can mosey upstairs any time of the week at 8pm to listen to a wide variety of bands gutsy enough to play for a musically rich and knowledgeable LES crowd. There is a cover for the upstairs lounge, usually $8 – but depending how packed they are and how early you’re there, you can sometimes get around this, or get it dropped to $5.

Beware though, on the weekends this place still draws a massive crowd and the line can get exhausting. Be an old lady (or man) like me, and head over for an early happy hour and meal so you can find yourself a seat…or corner to stand. Otherwise, be prepared for it to be hot and crowded. As NOT ideal as that may sound, the music, dancing and all around pumped up vibe make it all a bit better. Promise.

Thirsty Thursday – Old Town Bar

This Thirsty Thursday head to the Flatiron area of NYC for a quaint, cozy, old-time feeling bar – Old Town Bar.

Awarded “Best Old Bar in NYC” by NBC, Old Town Bar gives you the feeling you stepped back in time, just for a little, to experience what NYC might have been in 1892.

With a long mahogany bar and tin ceiling, Old Town Bar served drinks through Prohibition and still stands to serve you happy hour drinks 7 days a week as well as a full and extensive food menu.

When everything around seems to be geometric and modernized, I love a place with history seeping out of the walls; serving food and drinks alongside stories of Prohibition, the Mob and old-time New York City.

Thirsty Thursday – Mad River

I NEVER win anything chance related: raffles, scratch tickets, the lotto… BUT per the suggestion of one of my friends, I put my business card into a fish bowl to try and win a free / cheap happy hour for me and my friends. Guess what  – I WON! Because Mad River gave me my first chance-winning experience, I decided to showcase them today for Thirsty Thursday! That, and they have pretty good specials with theme nights! :)

Thirsty Thursday – The Red Lion

As Summer approaches, I couldn’t help but think of all the places my friends and I spend our summer nights, listening to live music and loving all New York City has to offer. This week’s Thirsty Thursday is what used to be a local spot. SO local for us, we often dodged the cover charge and knew the bouncer’s name. We’re suckers for good food, good happy hour and good live music what can I say?

We’ve seen a lot of great bands here, some really talented cover bands and original artists. Check out their Live Music Schedule and see if you recognize any of your local favs!

You can also watch almost any sporting event you want with their satellite sports channels, ESPECIALLY all the soccer one could hope for.

Or if you’re not a music or sports fanatic, simply come in for some lunch or dinner; they are open for both and have a pretty decent full menu to choose from including some delicious fish & chips!

Thirsty Thursday – Fulton

It’s that time of the week again, when we’re over the hump and the weekend is in sight. Many people, especially us New Yorkers are already pondering where to meet up with friends for the weekly Thursday Happy Hour.

Fulton Restaurant

This week I recommend Fulton. A nautically decorated seafood bar and restaurant on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. I personally love the decor here, feeling like you’re on a handcrafted wooden boat, it’s easy to forget about the taxis and traffic soaring down Third Avenue.

Happy Hour is from 5pm to 7pm every day and include:
~$1 Oysters & $.50 Clams
~$6 glasses of Cava, Sant Sadurni d’ Anoia, Chardonnay, Livermore Valley & Merlot
~$6 Vodka & Gin Cocktails & Drinks
~$10 Half Bottles of Chardonnay

They also bring baskets of delicious popcorn to nibble on if you’re not super hungry or an oyster or clam fan.

I recommend the oysters, of course, which are delicious & fresh as well as a slightly dirty Vodka Martini, which the bartenders make with near perfection.
